Stephen O’Dowd
BIO
Born and raised on the west coast of Ireland in County Sligo, Stephen O’Dowd is a fourth-generation musician from a family deeply rooted in Irish traditional music. Drawing inspiration from folk legends such as Thom Moore, Planxty, his father Seamie, and John Martyn, Stephen weaves mythical stories, vivid landscapes, and evocative characters into his songwriting. His multi-instrumental performances blend Irish traditional heritage with contemporary folk influences, creating songs that feel both timeless and immediate. Live, his music offers an immersive experience grounded in storytelling, texture, and deep musicality.
Based in Sligo, Stephen has emerged as a distinctive voice in Ireland’s contemporary folk scene. He has toured extensively across Ireland and the UK, performing at venues from London to Kerry to Derry, as well as on islands off Ireland’s rugged west coast. In spring 2025, he toured Ireland with Hugh Joseph Feely, selling out multiple shows including The Cobblestone, Dublin, and earning a reputation for intimate, powerful live performances that bridge modern songwriting and traditional folk.
Stephen has appeared on the main stage at Galway Folk Festival 2025, Whelan’s Trad & Folk Festival 2025, and Sligo Live, and has supported artists such as David Keenan, DUG, and Frazey Ford, alongside selling out his own headline shows.
In December 2024, Stephen released his second folk single “Johnny Whelan”, following his debut release “The Galleass Girona”, which received radio play. With further releases and live performances planned throughout 2025, Stephen continues to build recognition as a compelling and authentic voice in Irish folk music.
